Getting established with a primary care practice is easier to do before you need one, and harder than it used to be almost everywhere.
Check network status with the practice, not just the insurer
Insurer directories go stale. Call the practice, give them your specific plan name and group number, and ask whether they are in network for that plan. "We take that insurance" and "we are in network for your plan" are not the same sentence.
Ask whether they are accepting new patients
Practices open and close their panels without updating their websites. Ask directly, and ask how far out the first available new-patient appointment is. Several months is common; it does not reflect on the quality of the practice.
Ask how acute appointments work
The question that matters most day to day is what happens when you wake up sick. Ask whether the practice holds same-day slots, whether you would see your own physician or whoever is available, and what the after-hours arrangement is.
Bring your records
Request that your previous practice send records ahead of the first visit, and bring a written list of current medications and doses. It makes the first appointment substantially more useful.
Urgent care is not a substitute
Walk-in clinics are good at the thing they do: an infection, a sprain, stitches. They are not built to manage a chronic condition or to know your history. Use them for what they are, and still get established somewhere.
